The Advanced Technology Program (ATP) is a unique partnership in which thefederal government and private industry cooperatively fund research and development projects that have high technical risk and commensurate large potential for creating broad-based U.S. economic benefits. The Development of Advanced Technologies and Systems for Controlling Dimensional Variation in Automobile Body Manufacturing is a research project whose cost has been shared by industry and the ATP. The project early on was dubbed the '2mm project' in reference to its goal of matching and pushing beyond the then world-class standard for dimensional control in automobiles achieved by some Japanese and European producers.
