Distributed and Collaborative Production Management Systems in Discrete PartManufacturing. A Review of Research and Technology

This report is based on several projects that have been carried out at VTTAutomation since 1994. The issue was first studied in the Konfig project (Methodology of distributed production management). The aim of this project was to clarify, review and assess the problems and methodolgy of distributed and collaborative production management-systems in discrete part manufacturing. This work laid the basis of this report. It has since been extended and revised during the initial phase of the CAIP research program (Control Architectures for Intelligent Production). The theory and technology reviews produced in the CAIP-TEORIA and CAIP-TEKNO projects have particularly had significant impact on the result. Furthermore, some initial research ideas from the Genesis project (generic co-operation services in production management) are reflected in the report.
