The large number of options available to the energy conscious building designercalls for careful assessment of the competitiveness of the various technologies, in order to find the best technology mix for each design. Here, a simplified rigorous numerical multivariate optimization scheme is introduced to address the energy efficient solar low energy building design problem at the early stages. The applicability of the approach is assessed through a set of case studies for a single-family residential house and a large office building in three different climates in Europe: Helsinki, Finland (60 deg N), Paris, France (49 deg N) and Trapani, Italy (38 deg N). The analysis is based on annual hourly simulations with Test Reference Years. First, the design minimizing the sum of annual capital and energy cost of the building is determined.
