The NOBIS project 'Remediation Trail at NAM's Monitorinig Station No. 1 in Schoonebeek' focuses on the rate of degradation of mineral oil in the soil under 'in situ land farm conditions'. The relationship is examined between biological rate of degradation and ecological restoration. Different sets of natural conditions are applied whereby distinctions are made with respect to the measure of homogeneity, additives and oil concentrations. Novel methods for obtaining field measurements are used to measure the parameters O2 and CO2, which are related to degradation. A location of the NAM (Netherlands Petroleum Company), Monitoring Station No. 1 in Schoonebeek, was selected for carrying out the project. At the location nine test areas were laid out. In addition, three (untreated) reference areas were laid out to help with the interpretation of the results.
