Imports and Exports of Fishery Products, Annual Summary 1998

U.S. imports of edible fishery products in 1998 were valued at $8.2 billion, $418.9 million higher than in 1997. The quantity of edible imports was 1,654,279 metric tons, a 139,787 ton increase from the quantity imported in 1997. Imports of nonedible fishery products were valued at $7.5 billion, $685.4 million higher than imported in 1997. Total value of edible and nonedible products resulted in a record import value of $15.6 billion in 1998, $1.1 billion higher than in 1997, when $14.5 billion of fishery products were imported. U.S. exports of edible fishery products of domestic origin were 744,449 tons valued at $2.2 billion, compared with 894,499 tons at $2.6 billion exported in 1997. Exports of nonedible products were valued at $5.5 billion. Exports of fish meal amounted to 95,160 tons valued at $67.4 million. The total value of edible and nonedible exports was $7.7 billion, $662.1 million less than in 1997.
