Simulation of Underwater Gas Detonations Near a Submarine Hull

The non-linear evolution of underwater detonations near a submarine stern is211u001einvestigated numerically using a newly developed simulation model based on the 211u001ecompressible Navier Stokes Equations for two immiscible fluids. The governing 211u001eequations for the evolution of an underwater explosion bubble are described and 211u001ediscretized using a second order accurate finite volume discretization. The 211u001einterface is described using an indicator function which evolves as a Lagrange 211u001einvariant. In order to correctly treat the interface a new convection 211u001ediscretization procedure based on compressive differencing have been developed. 211u001eFurthermore, to handle compressibility effects embedded in the governing 211u001eequations a new solver for the resulting set of non-linear equations has been 211u001edeveloped. Validation studies have been performed to aid in the development of 211u001ethe numerical methods, and to assess the accuracy of the final simulation model. 211u001eDue to complexity of the problem some numerical problems remain to be solved. 211u001ePreliminary simulations of an underwater detonation near the stern of a fully 211u001eappended submarine have been performed.
