摘要

This report describes a portion of the work undertaken in project B.4 (Evaluation211u001eof Potential Fire Intervention Materials and Technologies) of the Cooperative 211u001eResearch Agreement between General Motors and NIST. The key objectives of this 211u001eproject are reduction of flame penetration, heat transfer and transport of toxic 211u001egases to the passenger compartment in a post-collision vehicle fire. To 211u001eaccomplish these goals, experiments were conducted using a passive fire 211u001eprotection technology involving intumescent paints and caulks. These materials 211u001eare used in the construction industry to reduce material flammability and to 211u001ereduce the penetration of heat and smoke through doorways and vents. In this 211u001estudy, experiments investigated the effectiveness of these materials in 211u001eprotecting body panels during simulated post-collision vehicle fires. The tested 211u001eintumescent coatings reduced heat conduction through a metal body panel, but 211u001efailed to close and prevent flames from penetrating even small (6 mm) holes, 211u001ewhich can occur due to the impact associated with a vehicle collision.
