Evaluation of the Installation and Initial Condition of High Performance Concrete211 Overlays Placed on Route 60 Over Lynnhaven Inlet in Virginia

Sixteen high performance concrete overlays were placed on two 28-span bridges on211u001eRte. 60 over Lynnhaven Inlet, Virginia Beach, VA in the spring of 1996. The 211u001econstruction was funded with 20% Virginia Department of Transportation 211u001emaintenance funds and 80% special ISTEA Section 6005 federal funds specifically 211u001eallocated to demonstrate overlay technologies. ISTEA funds were also used to 211u001eevaluate the installation and initial condition of the overlays and to prepare 211u001ethis report. The installation included 13 different concrete mixtures, an overlay 211u001ewith a thickness of only 19mm (0.75 in), and spans with and without topical 211u001etreatments of two corrosion inhibitors for a total of 16 different overlays. The 211u001eobjective of this research is to demonstrate and evaluate bridge deck overlays 211u001eplaced using ISTEA section 6005 funds.
