This manual is intended as a guide for the individual treatment of cocaine211u001eaddiction by addiction counselors. The counseling model described here was 211u001edeveloped originally for use in the Collaborative Cocaine Treatment Study 211u001esponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. This model was based on the 211u001ecounseling in the outpatient, drug-free program in the Addiction Recovery Unit 211u001eand in the methadone maintenance program which are both part of the Veterans 211u001eAffairs Medical Center. Twelve-step philosophy and participation is a central 211u001ecomponent of the model. Additionally, the authors have drawn upon the ideas of 211u001emany clinicians and theorists in this area. This individual counseling model can 211u001ebe viewed as a component within a comprehensive outpatient treatment program for 211u001ecocaine addition. Alternatively, the model can be offered independently of other 211u001etreatments, and referrals can be made for any additional services as needed.
