Labor Shortages, Needs and Related Issues in Small and Large Businesses. Part A:211 Labor Shortages in Small Firms

The first part of this report, 'Labor Shortages in Small Firms,' uses data from211u001ethe Skills Deficit Survey, conducted by the National Federation of Independent 211u001eBusiness in September 1998, to look at the difficulties encountered by small 211u001efirms (or less than 100 employees) during the 1990s. Among other things, it 211u001eexamines the causes of hiring difficulties encountered by these small firms and 211u001eidentifies successful recruitment strategies used by them. The second section, 211u001e'Contingent Workers in Small and Large Firms,' uses 1995 and 1997 data from the 211u001eCurrent Population Survey to examine the use of so-called 'contingent' workers 211u001e(such as temps, independent contractors, etc.) by small and large firms. The 211u001edemographic and labor market characteristics of the contingent workforce are 211u001edetailed, as well as the wages and benefits received by these workers.
