This summary report explains an incident that occurred March 27, 1998, at Union211u001eCarbide Corporations Taft/Star Manufacturing Plant in Hahnville, Louisiana. One 211u001eUnion Carbide worker was killed and an independent contractor was seriously 211u001einjured due to nitrogen asphyxiation.Safety issues discussed in this report 211u001einclude the hazards of temporary enclosures and the use of nitrogen when working 211u001ein confined spaces. Recommendations concerning these issues were made to Union 211u001eCarbide Corporation, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and 211u001eothers. This summary report also contains a recommendation to the National 211u001eInstitute for Occupational Safety and Health that it conduct a study concerning 211u001ethe feasibility of odorizing nitrogen when it is used in confined spaces.
