Landslide Remediation Using Unconventional Methods

Landslides are very common within the residual soils and sedimentary rock of211u001eSouthern Indiana. A substantial amount of the Indiana State budget is spent on 211u001eroad repair and maintenance from damage caused by landslide. The landslide 211u001eremedial technique frequently applied by the Indiana Department of Transportation 211u001e(INDOT) is the excavation and backfill method, which in most instances is 211u001esuccessful. However, in may cases more liberal landslide treatments may be 211u001eapplied that would arrest movement, provide a sufficient safety factor, and at a 211u001elower cost. The objective of this study is to propose economically feasible 211u001elandslide remedial methods that may be used as an alternative to the excavation 211u001eand backfill method. 'Unconventional' landslide remedial methods describe 211u001estabilization methods that are not commonly practiced in Indiana, and for which 211u001edesign criteria are not available. Unconventional stabilization methods will 211u001elikely have the greatest benefit applied to relatively small landslides requiring 211u001econstant maintenance because these landslides are in a delicate equilibrium. 211u001eRelatively modest improvements in stability may be sufficient to stop persistent 211u001emovements. Proposed landslide remedial methods are conventional horizontal 211u001edrains, driven horizontal wick drains, driven recycled plastic pins, railroad 211u001erail piles, lime piles, biotechnical remediation, and gravity mass retaining 211u001esystems. A landslide inventory containing various attribute information of 211u001egeologic environment and landslide geometry was compiled. The inventory includes 211u001e284 landslides with attribute information of each individual landslide.
