Further Optimisation of the Enlarged Ship Concept Applied to RORO Cargo/Passenger211 Vessel

The 'Enlarged Ship Concept' (ESC) was successfully applied to a freighter in the211u001eform of a RORO Cargo/Passenger Vessel. Their results showed a performance 211u001eimprovement both in a technical and economical sense, however recommendations 211u001ewere made for further improvement of the enlarged ship designs in order to 211u001eproduce even better results. These recommendation include the following design 211u001ework: optimization of the vertical position of the upper deck of the enlarged 211u001evessel in order to reduce the vessel mass, while, at the same time, satisfying 211u001ethe requirements regarding allowable stress values due to longitudinal bending 211u001emoments; optimize the mass of the enlarged vessels by the utilization of high 211u001etensil steel; optimize the vessel form with regard to vessel resistance and 211u001epropulsion; optimize the vessels turn around time by not utilizing the lower deck 211u001efor the carriage of trailers. In this paper these recommendations are carried out 211u001ewhich lead to an even more promising performance improvement both in a technical 211u001eand economical sense. It is shown that the ESC certaintly has a good viability 211u001efor these types of vessels creating even more income possibilities for the 211u001eshipowners and a much safer vessel, even though it produces a more expensive ship 211u001eto buy and exploit.
