Natural Organic Material (NOM) in aquatic systems controls the effectiveness of211u001eengineered treatment processes and the fate of metals and pollutants in natural 211u001esystems. Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (PY-GC-MS) was used to 211u001echaracterize the organic matrix of eleven surface waters and one groundwater from 211u001ethroughout North America providing chafacteristic chemical fingerprint of the NOM 211u001ein each sample. The fingerprints of samples from three sources treated with 211u001econventional and enhanced coagulation have been analyzed statistically in an 211u001eattempt to establish quantitative relationships between DBP formation and the 211u001echaracteristics of NOM. Samples from five sources were collected monthly over the 211u001ecourse of a year to identify changes in the organic matrix of the waters due to 211u001eseasonal effects and in one case due to passage through a wetland. Using 211u001eprincipal component analysis (PCA) with PY-GC-MS data, seasonal changes were 211u001eidentified in the organic matrix of each of the waters. Behavioral differences 211u001eand similarities in the samples due to source, seasonal changes, and passage 211u001ethrough a wetland were found. This work establishes a basis for using PY-GC-MS 211u001ewith statistical and multivariate analysis to compare the organic matrix of 211u001ediverse waters and provides improvements in the capability to characterize the 211u001eorganic characteristics of NOM in aquatic systems.
