Building Bridges VI: The Road to Quality Care: Using Research to Drive QualityImprovement was jointly presented by the American Association of Health Plans, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the blue cross and Blue Shield Association. The conference objectives were to discuss current research activities, results, and application of findings by health plans, purchasers, and the research community; explore how health care policy makers use research to generate quality improvements in health care; and examine how to effectively translate research findings into actionable care delivery protocols. The objectives were met through an agenda that included general sessions and smaller, more interactive breakout sessions. A two-day poster session provided conference participants with the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the types, quality, and breadth of managed care research projects being undertaken in all sectors of the health care industry. Topics featured at the conference included: patient safety, the contribution of clinical research to quality care, how to organize health systems to promote quality care, the use cost-effectiveness data, issues of racial and ethnic disparity, accountability for metal health care and the establishment of prevention priorities.
