摘要

Emodin is an orange, needle-shaped, crystalline material. It is practically insoluble in cold water, and soluble in ethanol, aqueous alkali hydroxide solutions (cherry-red color), sodium carbonate and ammonia solutions. Emodin is a naturally occurring anthroquinone that occurs in the roots and bark of numerous plants of the genus Rhamnus. It occurs as the rhamnoside in rhubarb root, Rheum palmatum and other species, not garden rhubarb, which is one of the oldest and best known Chinese herbal medicines. It is also found in the roots, leaves and barks of buckthorn, senna, frangula, aloe, and cascara. Preparations of all these plants have been used in herbal laxatives.
