摘要

The report is the sixth in a series of regional public meetings on: 'Improving Cancer Care for All: Real People, Real Problems,' raising the question: 'Why Don't All Americans Get the Best Available Cancer Care.' This series of meetings grew out of the Panel's effort in 1999 to evaluate the National Cancer Program, in which the authors identified a significant disconnect between research discoveries and the delivery of the benefits of this knowledge to the American public. The Panel concluded in 1999 that the unequal burden of cancer on the poor, certain ethnic minorities, and the underserved must be relieved. These issues were explored through a series of regional meeting-in Omaha, Nebraska; Burlington, Vermont; Billings, Montana; Nashville, Tennessee; Los Angeles, California; and, today and tomorrow, here in Albuquerque, New Mexico. And in fact, the hearings then will have covered the whole country, in seven different regional meetings. The final Panel meeting is scheduled to be in Washington, DC. This process will culminate in the President's Cancer Panel Report to the President of the United States near the end of this year, hopefully in December.
