摘要

The purpose for convening this meeting is to examine the challenges of living after diagnosis and treatment of cancer. These challenges often include accessing long-term continuous care, obtaining and maintaining employment, and a variety of economic and social issues. The agenda for today's meeting, Survivorship Issues and Challenges Among Pediatric Cancer Survivors, includes the following: (1) a presentation summarizing the findings of the new Institute of Medicine Report on Childhood Cancer Survivorship$ and (2) examples of cancer survivorship experiences as told by those diagnosed with cancer as children or as told by family members who have struggled directly with cancer, its treatment, and longer-term impact. Our primary goal in the short time we have together is to generate discussion, ideas, and recommendations for follow-up by the Panel and other stakeholders who are committed to managing and overcoming the disease. The President's Cancer Panel has as its charge to monitor the development and execution of this nation's cancer program and to make suggestions to the President of the United States for improving our national effort to address the burden of cancer for all our citizens across all populations and communities.
