The Academy for Educational Development continues to grow-in reputation, partnerships, and the number of programs it operates in all the major sectors of development. Our programs are recognized for their innovation, results, and capacity to go to scale, moving beyond communities to regions and nations to create sustainable systemic change. One example is our program to prevent mother-to-child transmission of AIDS, which has expanded from one district in Zambia to 25 districts. Another is our teacher preparation program, launched at four prominent American universities in 2002 and recently expanded to seven new sites. Through Migrant Head Start and programs for children with disabilities, AED continues to give special attention to children most in need in the United States. As part of our Strategic Plan, AED is beginning to implement several long-term goals, including a plan to work effectively in a diverse global context and a professional development program to address the needs of our own staff to develop in new directions, Career Visions. We also created two new centers: one to coordinate our HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and support programs, and another dedicated to civil society and democracy. We are reaching beyond our projects and proposals to strengthen communication between the Academy and representatives of predominantly Muslim societies, especially in the Middle East. In 2004, AED will undertake a series of visits, symposia, and conferences to reinforce the trust we have established over 40 years of work in these countries. AED's financial position is excellent, with a balanced budget and a small surplus to be used for new initiatives, including creating models for cross-cutting programs that use our unique multi-sector expertise. In 2004, we are launching AED's campaign for Change Through Children to raise funds for critical new programs to improve children's health and education, and to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. The Academy has an excellent record of transparency and full disclosure. We have taken additional steps this year to strengthen the Audit Committee of the Board and its independence. We thank our donors, partners, and staff for their commitment to AED's mission. We continue to work toward achieving our vision of a world in which every individual can contribute to the wellbeing of their family, community, and nation.
