Synthesis of Health Services Research for Policy Makers

AcademyHealth (formerly the Academy for Health Services Research and Health Policy) conducted a small working conference on November 27, 2001, to discuss how to increase the policy relevance of health services research. The authors convened health policy experts and health services researchers to discuss synthesizing, translating, and disseminating research findings focused on four current policy debates. A concrete outcome of the conference-delivered in the Final Report-is four scopes of work that can be used to fund syntheses of research findings on behavioral responses to changes in health care financing and organization. Although this excludes other important areas of health services research-such as outcomes, quality measurement, patient safety, and technology assessment-the purpose, organization, and lessons of the conference can be generalized to these other areas.
