摘要

The authors have initially proposed to study the feasibility of replacing existing in-ground induction loops with above-ground traffic detection systems. The proposed study uses state of the art technology and algorithms that simulate a 'traffic cop' with built-in preference for public transit, such as buses and trucks. It was also the intent of the study to demonstrate the benefits of extending the Claim-to-Green to heavier vehicles, where detection of weight is essential. However, all above-ground systems only detect vehicle length or size, while providing excessive data on vehicle classification. Such systems are also highly dependent on weather and lighting conditions. According to the authors' findings, the authors have thus resorted to an in-ground fiber optic load sensing system for detecting vehicle momentum (VM). The competitive cumulative momentum (CMV) model allows traffic in cross streets to compete for the right of way; hence, the lane with the higher CMV value commands the Green. The Green alternatives, whenever CMV values alternate. This model thus provides a natural way of managing intersection traffic, similar to that of a traffic cop.
