Building Bridges to Stop Violence against Immigrant Women: Effective Strategies and Promising Models for Reaching and Serving Immigrant Women

Violence against women is a serious problem that has manifested itself in complex ways in all human societies. Efforts in the United States to end violence against women are part of work around the globe to ensure women's safety. One strength of our increasingly diverse society is that efforts to stop violence against women can draw on the wisdom of women from cultures which value mobilizing community and family resources to address problems, as well as those which rely on more individual solutions. In order to serve the two million immigrant women who live in New York State, violence against women programs have found it extremely valuable to work with immigrant-community based organizations to develop programs which are culturally and linguistically appropriate, and which also solve problems of immigration status and economic survival. Programs offering victim services and protection have found most effective providing assistance which is targeted to fit the specific cultural, linguistic, economic and legal context of immigrant women's lives.
