In this report the results of the pilot dosimetry intercomparison for external beams performed in the framework of the Istituto Superiore di Sanita (ISS, Italian National Institute of Health) project 'Continuous Quality Improvement in Radiotherapy' are presented. 16 Italian Radiotherapy Centres participated. The aim of the intercomparison was to evaluate the difference between the stated dose and the dose measured with transfer dosimeters in reference conditions in a water phantom and during a simulated treatment of rectum cancer in an anthropomorphic phantom. Alanine and TLD were used as transfer dosimeters. The Laboratory of Physics (now Department of Technology and Health) of the ISS was the coordinating Centre and evaluated the delivered dose. In this report, after a short description of the intercomparison and the selected transfer dosimetry system, the various uncertainty components of the dose delivery and measurement are discussed with the goal of establishing remedial levels. The results of the intercomparison are then presented and discussed.
