Chronology of Major Events Affecting the National Flood Insurance Program

In 1968, the U.S. Congress passed the National Flood Insurance Act (Title XII of the Housing and Urban Development Act of 1968 (PL 90-448)), which created the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Floods are the most frequent and costly of all natural disasters, killing an average of 100 people in the United States each year. Flood-related property damage in the U.S. totals an average of $5 billion annually.
