The state of Wyoming is subject to frequent episodes of high winds, which can and often do have had severe consequences to light high-profile vehicles. This paper investigates the various types of high-wind crash modes (vehicle blown over or pushed out of its lane dry pavement, losing traction or pushed into jack-knife on slick pavement), the key parameters that come into play in causing a high-wind related crash, along with the direct economic impacts of high-wind crashes. Historical Wyoming crash data was analyzed, along with historical wind data (from the time and locations of the crashes). A technology assessment, together with a survey of truck drivers and the kinds of systems that have been deployed elsewhere provide inputs as to the most promising potential communication and other risk-mitigation strategies. Finally, a possible system, incorporating multiple components, is proposed to reduce the risk (frequency and severity) of high wind crashes.
