Bioenergy & Energy Alternatives: ARS National Program 307 Accomplishment Report 1999-2006.

Before 1999, the relatively limited scope of bioenergy research at Agricultural Research Service (ARS) was managed under the National Program for Quality and Utilization Research. The formation of a separate National Program in bioenergy was initiated by a workshop in April, 1999 which provided the agency with input from stakeholders about the nature of the technical barriers to the growth of both biofuels and the use of alternative energy in agriculture. The barriers identified at this workshop are summarized. With the intention of addressing these barriers and considering its unique, but limited capabilities, ARS developed a set of goals that ARS research would target over the next 5-7 years. These goals, which constitute the Action Plan for the new National Program in Bioenergy and Energy Alternatives. The bulk of this report summarizes selected, technical accomplishments that resulted from the ensuing research. These accomplishments are categorized in this report by the Program's major components: Ethanol conversion efficiency; Ethanol biorefinery co-products; Biodiesel; Alternative energy; Energy crops.
