The addition of a small amount of dilute phosphor copper to Vanasil exerts a powerful influence in reducing silicon particle size and segregation Mach inability tests show an almost threefold increase in tap life when phosphor copper is added to Vanasil. Modification by phosphor copper offers several advantages as contrasted to modification by sodium or sodium salts. These advantages are:reliability and ease of control, ability to be effective throughout the duration of a melt held molten at least two and one half hours, and ability to be effective when the alloy is remelted.
