Pure-tone and spondee thresholds, in quiet and in two levels of white noise, were obtained for a number of normally hearing and hypacusic subjects with a view to evaluating the hypothesis that such noise will produce the same amount of masking (M) in an ear which is impaired — whether conductively or percep¬tively — as it will produce in a normal ear, provided that the effective level (Z) of the masking noise is the same for the two ears.
