In a study of approximately 20 cats the animals were anesthetized with pentobarbital sodium and the anesthesia level adjusted so that shivering was absent or vigorous. The animals were then subjected to hypoxia by progressively decreasing in a 1-to 3-hour period the percentage of oxygen in inhaled N2:O2 mixtures. Decreasing the oxygen percentage between 21 and 13% had no effect on shivering .Between 13 and8% shivering decreased until it was abolished and oxygen consumption rate decreased to the non-shivering value. with non-shivering decerebrate cats as the inhaled oxygen was progressively decreased oxygen consumption rate did not change until the range of 6 to 3%O2was reached after which gasping respiration and apnea occurred.
