Knowledge of intrapleural pressure is essential in the study of many problems in the mechanics of breathing. The following studies were undertaken to learn the best methods of measuring this pressure and to determine the validity of the assumption that intrapleural pressure as measured at one spot in the pleural cavity is representative of the pressure at all other points about the lung’s surface.
