REPORT NO. 281 THE PROPHYLACTIC INFLUENCE OF CYSTEINE ON THE SPLEEN OF RATS EXPOSED TO WHOLE BODY X-IRRADIATION

The purpose of this study is to compare in a sequential fashion the weight and histological changes in the spleens of cysteine-treated and non-cysteine-treated x-irradiated rats.nThe spleen weight of rats, expressed as a per cent of body weight, was measured following exposure to 600 r, 720 r, and 880 r. A fourth group of rats was treated with cysteine prior to exposure to 720 r. The spleen weights in all groups decreased slightly during the first few hours following irradiation and then showed a more pronounced decrease which reached a maximal depression on the third and fourth days post irradiation.
