So much technical literature exists today and so much scientific research now cuts across traditional subject matter boundaries that traditional methods of literature search have become inefficient and unreliable.nThe fast and reliable recovery of relevant information from large file (now usually called information retrieval) has also become more and more of a problem for businessmen and lawyers.nPart IV of the present report describes a non-mechanized retrieval system which can be produced by a card punch and a printer operated by UNIVAC-produced tapes. Once the system is thus produced, its punched cards and printed tables are used without any machines. The formulas for storage and search time are indicated,
