An investigation was conducted to determine the weldability of six cast aluminum alloys (Almag 35, A1-7% Mg, 214. 356, 42B, and Al-7% Ug-3% Zn) to 5086 wrought aixminom alloy sheet. The inert-gas-shielded metal-arc (tungsten electrode) welding process (TIG process) was employed.nIt was found that, within the scope of this investigation, the cast alloys Almag 35, Al-7% Mg, and 214 could be satisfactorily welded to the 5086 material. When the casting was overmatched by the 5086 member, thereby forcing failure to occur in. the casting, the material combinations having the highest ultimate joint strength included Almag 35, Al-7% Mg, and 214, in that order with very little difference between the latter two.
