Deer Browsing in Northern Hardwoods after Clearcutting. Effect on Height, Density, and Stocking of Regeneration of Commercial Species

Heavy deer browsing in clearcut northern hardwood stands can seriously reduce the height and density of commercial reproduction. These effects appear to be greatest in stems in the 3- to 5-foot height range. Where browsing is heavy, the density and stocking rates of stems above 3 feet in height may be a better indicator of the progress of stand establishment than if stems under 3 feet are included. The taller stems also appear to be a better indicator of the capability of stands to regenerate themselves. (Author)
