Hemo-Diafiltration: Evaluation of a New Approach to the Purification of Uremic Blood Through Simultaneous Ultrafiltration and Fluid Reconstitution

Hemodiafiltration, the removal of undesirable solutes from blood by extracorporeal ultrafiltration, has been shown experimentally to effect more through blood cleansing than can be achieved by hemodialysis. Substances with molecular weights up to 300 are completely filtered by convective transport across UM-1 Diaflo membranes at pressures of 10 to 15 p.s.i. Concentration-polarization of protein at the membrane surface reduces ultrafiltration flux rates from .06 ml/min/sq cm to .02 ml/min/sq cm. This limitation can be minimized by increasing fluid motion at the blood-membrane interface. (Author)
