Theory of Adhesion, Mechanism of Bond Failure, and Mechanism for Bond Improvement

The various theories of adhesion are discussed, with mention of some aspects that are inconsistent with recent bonding developments. A mechanism for adhesive failure is proposed on the basis of thermodynamics and experimental phenomena. Surface treatments are described which significantly improve adhesion and which suggest that chemical bonds are necessary to achieve the ultimate in bond durability. (Author)
