Antarctic Research and Data Analysis. The Antarctic Ionosphere. Part a: Survey and Basic Information

A general survey of the Antarctic ionosphere is given. It is based on our own investigation of data collected since the beginning of the IGY, supplemented extensively by results published by other investigators. The first part contains the necessary basic information, followed by a survey of the 'climate of the ionosphere', i.e. the average conditions, and finally the 'dynamics of the ionosphere', i.e. the disturbed conditions. In this first part a general description of the upper atmosphere is given; the methods of exploring the ionosphere are briefly outlined; the station parameters, equipment, and data are listed. Samples of data and an extensive number of graphical representations are given. (Author)
