Oxystarch was studied extensively in its characteristics and properties. Solubility, complexes, characteristic reactions, rotatory power, elemental analysis, infrared analysis, NMR, determination of JO3 and JO4, determination of acidity, detection of formaldehyde and determination of non oxydized glucosidic units were all studied. Data showed that oxystarch contains 95-99% of aldehydic groups and that presence of formaldehyde is negligible. A clinical trial was performed on 14 patients with terminal uremia. Data indicated that oxystarch administration lowers azotemia and increases nitrogen content in feces. Isotopic experiments demonstrated that excess of nitrogen in feces is due to the presence of urea bound to oxystarch. Oxystarch was also mixed to amino acid diet without losing its urea trapping effect. The addition of 100 g of oxystarch to the dialysis bath did not result in any discomfort for the patients.
