Evaluation of a Method for Obtaining Signal Attenuation from Backscatter Measurements

The effects of variations in the drop size distribution function on theoretically relating radar backscatter at one frequency to attenuation at the same frequency and at other frequencies is investigated. The effects are found to be essentially negligible at frequencies near the reference frequency. At frequencies approximately one decade above the reference frequency, the difference in the predicted attenuation and that computed from a measured drop size distribution in an actual rain shower is 1.34 dB. The predicted attenuation is lower. (Author)
