Small Buildings in Earthquake Areas

This handbook is not written for the professionally qualified architect or engineer, but for builders and others who actually construct small buildings in earthquake areas. A small building is defined as a building of not more than two floors, with a total floor area not nore than about 120 sq m. This is the type of building in which the large majority of people live, and which is generally build without structural calculations by professional engineers. If construction methods similar to those described herein are followed there will be many lives saved in future earthquakes; buildings many crack, but they should not collapse and kill the occupants. The scope of the handbook covers rural houses will earth walls as well more permanent buildings with wall of brick, masonry and framed timber.
