Psychological-Behavioral Stratigies for Accident Control: A System for Diagnosis and Intervention

The development of an occupational safety diagnostic and intervention system based on behavioral science strategies is described. Previously used safety specific and general job/organizational approaches to hazard prevention are evaluated together with shortcomings in the understanding of psychological and behavioral factors that affect accident frequency. The design, components, and application of the Diagnostic Safety Form, Action Modules, and Diagnostic Safety Form/Action Module Tracing System are discussed. The major advantages of this three factor system are noted, including the provision for a wide variety of correction strategies, the ability of the user organization to maintain control over the evaluation process, the specificity of each step in the evaluation process, and the research applicability of the system.
