To Conduct an Evaluation of the Automated Hospital Information System

The purpose of this study was to assess the usefulness of all Automated Hospital Information System (AHIS) outputs at the Veterans Administration (VA) hospital in Washington, including reports, listing messages, and confirmation of input displays, in terms of contribution to direct patient care, administrative efficiency and effectiveness, ease of man-machine interfacing, and employee morale. The primary function of the AHIS is as a communications system. User groups include the ward care team, providers of ancillary services, medical administration activities, top management, and other elements and systems of the VA. The study found that AHIS was generally responsive to the needs of key user groups and recommended that its status should be maintained. The clinical laboratory subsystem and the extension of the scheduling processor to include outpatient clinics should be brought to logical completion. A Systems Planning Committee should be created to develop both short and longer term ADP plans for the station. AHIS should be retained until an equally comprehensive system is available to conform with static and VA-wide specifications.
