Development Model for the Agricultural Sector of Portugal.

The general objective of the analysis reported here was to determine whether a certain type of model could produce better insight into the mechanics of agricultural development, one that would lead to the design of improved agricultural development strategies and programs. The study comprised four phases. First, a spatial equilibrium programming model was developed and tested, using 1968 data and other relevant information. Second, two simplified models, one partial and the other aggregative, were designed and tested to determine the types and magnitudes of errors that could result from using such simplified models. Third, the eleven-region model was used to specify investment programs for Portugal's agriculture through 1980. Fourth, these investment programs were compared with the recommendations that had been made in the survey mission's report to the Portuguese government.
