Resource Flows and Values

Technical Note No. 276, Resource Flows and Values, presents a technique that may help natural resource managers more fully understand the scope of their work. Decision-makers must deal simultaneously with many different multiple-use resource programs. An input-output modeling system was developed to simulate a forest management system. The input-output model is explained through an example of labor and capital in the coal and steel industries. A forestry modeling example discusses the interdependence of both activities and decisions. Interactivity effects of timber, fish, reforestation, deer, recreation, etc. are included in the model. The results are a set of quantitative data and equations which characterize biological effects and a set of value equations which assign prices to the outputs.
