U.S. Sentencing Commission Preliminary Quarterly Data Report, 1st Quarterly Release, Preliminary Fiscal Year 2012 Data Through December 31, 2011

As part of its ongoing mission, the United States Sentencing Commission provides Congress, the judiciary, the executive branch, and the general public with data extracted and analyzed from sentencing documents submitted by courts to the Commission. Data is reported on an annual basis in the Commissions Annual Report and Sourcebook of Federal Sentencing Statistics. After the Supreme Courts decision in United States v. Booker on January 12, 2005, which rendered the sentencing guidelines advisory instead of mandatory, many people expressed an interest in knowing what changes, if any, in federal sentencing practices would result. The Commission responded by reconfiguring its data collection, analysis, and reporting efforts to provide real-time data reporting from the submitted documents.
