Biolized Latex Polyurethanes.

Biolized latex polyurethanes were studied as potential blood compatible materials. Three latex polyurethanes were initially characterized with respect to their shelf life stability, i.e. changes in pH and emulsion stability,as a function of time. The processing procedures were optimized with respect to protein addition,casting,and heat treatment. The base and biolized latex polyurethanes were physically characterized by scanning electron microscopy,differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray dispersion analysis,hydrolysis,and tensile testing. The base and biolized latex polyurethanes blood compatibilities were determined in vitro by the Kinetic Clotting test. The results of the above showed significantly improved blood compatibility of the biolized latex polyurethanes relative to the unbiolized latex polyurethanes. The mechanical properties of the biolized films were found to be on the same order as the films of the unbiolized latex polyurethanes.
