Proceedings of NSF Workshop on Opportunities for Microstructures Science, Engineering and Technology in Cooperation with the NRC Panel on Thin Film Microstructure Science and Technology, Held at Airlie, Virginia on November 19-22, 1978

A top-level interdisciplinary group of scientists and engineers convened to identify opportunities for significant new work related to microstructures. The focus was on work which will be facilitated or made necessary by advances in the technologies for creating and analyzing microstructures. Subsidiary goals were to allow researchers with widely different backgrounds to share ideas for research problems and opportunities, to inform them of the capabilities and mission of the National Research and Resource Facility for Submicron Structures at Cornell University, and to inform the facility personnel of the needs of the scientific community. The workshop was divided into sessions which followed classical disciplinary lines: (1) molecular engineering and analysis, (2) thin film microstructure science and technology, (3) chemistry, (4) materials research, (5) physics, (6) biology and medicine, (7) computer systems and architecture, (8) electronic devices, and (9) electronic systems. This volume is a compilation of all written submissions.
