The Effects of Temperature Control on Biological Wastewater Treatment Processes.

This study is concerned with the feasibility of using waste heat to optimize the performance of a biological wastewater treatment facility through temperature control. The effect of temperature on biological wastewater treatment was modelled by considering its influence on several important processes. In particular,the specific influence of temperature on the bacterial kinetic parameters,the oxygen transfer process,and the biomass settling was included in the model. The parameters chosen to determine the effect of temperature on the system were effluent quality,mass wastage (sludge disposal) rate,and the power requirements for aeration. These parameters reflect both the primary purpose of waste treatment and the major operating costs. The results of a computer simulation show that an optimal temperature for operation of a secondary wastewater treatment facility is approximately 25C.
