摘要

This report provides reliable national estimates of some basic measures of sexual and drug use behavior that may be related to an elevated risk for acquiring human immunodeficiency virus or HIV, the virus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The approach follows previous survey analyses in describing behaviors that have been associated with the transmission of HIV in epidemiologic studies. Reducing the number of people who become infected with HIV is one of the three primary goals of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy. At the end of 2008, an estimated 1.2 million persons in the United States were living with HIV, with 20% undiagnosed and unaware of their HIV status. In addition, an estimated 48,100 people were newly infected with HIV in 2009. The year 2011 marks the 30th anniversary of the first diagnosed case of HIV, and it remains important to understand and measure behaviors associated with risk for acquiring HIV.
