Biology and Breeding for Resistance to Arthropods and Pathogens in Agricultural Plants

Breeding for resistance to major pests, coupled with biological control, offers developing countries and small farmers the most promising way to achieve the doubling of crop productivity that will be needed in the next 25 years to meet the food needs of an expanding world population. In this paper, five reports on issues related to sorghum culture are reprinted from the proceedings of a 1979 international workshop on host plant resistance co-sponsored by A.I.D. and held at Texas A&M University. A paper on the biology of sorghum describes the plant's advantages and shortcomings in disease resistance.
